Flat Foot

What it is?

Flat foot, also known as fallen arches or pes planus, is a condition where the arch of the foot is significantly lower or absent. This causes the entire sole of the foot to make contact with the ground when standing or walking.

Causes

Flat foot can be either congenital (present at birth) or acquired due to various factors such as injury, weak connective tissues, age, obesity, or repeated stress on the feet. It can occur in one foot or both feet.

Symptoms

Symptoms of flat foot include foot pain, fatigue, swelling, imbalance, and difficulty with physical activities. Some individuals with flat foot may experience no symptoms at all.

Diagnosis

Treatment for flat foot focuses on relieving symptoms and improving foot function. This can involve the use of orthotic shoe inserts to provide support, wearing arch support footwear, engaging in physical therapy exercises to strengthen the foot muscles, and managing underlying conditions such as obesity or diabetes.

What to do?

In severe cases where flat foot causes chronic pain or interferes with daily activities, surgical interventions such as tendon repair or joint fusion may be considered.

It is important to consult with a healthcare professional, such as a podiatrist, for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan for flat foot.
