Rheumatoid Arthritis

What it is?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints. It causes chronic inflammation and can lead to pain, stiffness, and swelling of the joints.

When it occurs?

RA occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues, specifically the synovial membrane that lines the joints. This attack causes excessive inflammation in the joints and can eventually lead to damage to the cartilage, bones, and tendons.

Causes

The exact cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The disease is more common in women and tends to develop between the ages of 30 and 60.

Symptoms

Symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis include joint pain, tenderness, and swelling, as well as morning stiffness that lasts for more than an hour. The joints most commonly affected are the smaller joints of the hands, wrists, and feet, but larger joints can also be involved.

Diagnosis

Treatment for rheumatoid arthritis aims to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and prevent joint damage. This can be achieved through a combination of medications, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and biologic response modifiers. Physical therapy, regular exercise, and lifestyle changes can also help manage the symptoms of RA.

What to do?

While there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help to control the disease and improve quality of life for those affected. It is important to work closely with a healthcare professional to develop a personalized treatment plan.
