Rheumatology

What it is?

Orthopedic Rheumatological disease, often referred to as rheumatologic orthopedics, encompasses a group of diseases that affect both the musculoskeletal system and the immune system. These diseases primarily affect the joints, muscles, bones, and connective tissues.

Diseases

1. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA): RA is an autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints, causing chronic inflammation, pain, and stiffness. It can lead to joint deformity and impairment if left untreated.

2. Osteoarthritis (OA): Unlike RA, which is an autoimmune disease, OA is a degenerative joint disease. It is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage in the joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Aging, obesity, joint injury, and genetic factors can contribute to the development of OA.

3. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): SLE is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects various organs, including the joints. It can cause joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, along with other symptoms such as fatigue, rashes, and kidney problems.

4. Psoriatic arthritis: Psoriatic arthritis is a form of arthritis that accompanies the skin condition psoriasis. It can cause joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and skin lesions. In some cases, psoriatic arthritis can result in joint damage and deformity.

5. Ankylosing spondylitis: Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the spine and sacroiliac joints. It can cause pain, stiffness, and limited mobility in the back and hips. If left untreated, it may lead to fusion of spinal vertebrae.

6. Fibromyalgia: Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder that is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive difficulties. It does not cause joint inflammation, but it can lead to significant pain and functional impairment.

These are just a few examples of orthopedic rheumatological diseases. Each condition requires a specific diagnosis and treatment plan, which may include medication, physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, and sometimes surgical intervention. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management of these diseases.
