Sciatica

What it is?

Sciatica is a term used to describe pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down the back of each leg. The pain typically starts in the lower back and travels through the buttock and down the back of the thigh and calf. It can range from a mild ache to sharp, shooting pain and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the leg.

Causes

Sciatica is usually caused by a herniated disc in the spine, which puts pressure on the nerve. Other potential causes include spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), spondylolisthesis (a forward displacement of a vertebra), or compression of the nerve due to a muscle spasm or tumor.

Treatments

Treatment for sciatica typically involves conservative measures such as rest, pain medication, physical therapy, and exercises to strengthen the back and core muscles. In some cases, more invasive treatments such as epidural steroid injections or surgery may be necessary.

What to do?

It is important to consult with a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan for sciatica.
